What is the significance of voluntary blood donation and how can DAPCUs promote it?
Every day is a Voluntary blood donation
day and it is very important where blood needed. The donation of
blood is a donation of life. Blood is vital to human life.
Safe Blood saves lives |
Against an annual requirement of 8
million units of blood, India is able to collect only 5.6 million
units of which 3 million units (56%) are from voluntary blood donors
while the remaining 2.6 million units (44%) from family/replacement
donors.
In spite of the rapid and remarkable
advancements in medical science today, no factory can manufacture
blood. This is the greatest gift one can do
for the mankind.Healthy individuals should be regular
voluntary blood donors.A safe and sustainable supply of blood
and blood products should be the aim in front of every Health
System.
Voluntary Blood Donors are considered
as the safest source of blood as they have low prevalence of TTIs
(Transfusion Transmissible Infections) like HIV, Hepatitis B,
Hepatitis C, Malaria and Syphilis while the family/replacement donors
carry higher prevalence of TTIs.

Role of DAPCU in the Promotion of
Voluntary Blood Donation program.
DAPCU Amravati is taking initiative
for starting the Blood Donation Camp in Government departments in the
period of vacation in colleges like Summer Vacation and Diwali
Vacation. The supply chain management of blood collapses in
this period. The details of this camp promotion are already posted on
blog on 28th may 2012 in DAPCU Achievements.
The Blood Collection is huge in
festival season like Ganesh-utsav and Navratri. As far as the
routine blood demand and collection graph is concerned it is observed
that the shortage of blood is in the period of summer and Diwali. We
observed that the voluntary blood donation camps are rarely seen in
this period. DAPCU Amravati started the one special activity for
blood donation on National Holidays like, Republic Day,
Independence Day, Maharashtra Day, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and other
days like 9th august etc. The Impact of this activity of blood
donation is that it increases and the VBD collection in these days is useful
in Diwali Vacations. Maharashtra Day (1st May) VBD Collection is the
biggest event in Divisional Commissioner office campus and the
collection is consumed in the month of May.
In Amravati the average collection in
the all blood bank is nearly about 15000 to 20000 units. As the DAPCU
taken the initiative, the awareness regarding VBD is increases day by
day. Now a days in Rural area DAPCU trying to organize camp and also
awareness about HB in woman.
In Amravati every year “Rang De
Basanti” Blood donation camp is organized. The donors come with their spouse for blood donation. In this
camp, the DAPCU could collect nearly 1000 units of blood.
