CASE STUDY ON
STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION OF
A POSITIVE CLIENT
IN SENAPATI DISTRICT, MANIPUR
It was in
the month of October, 2012 DAPCU Senapati organized 4-days Surgical Health Camp
in collaboration with CA California USA and Oking Hospital, Kohima in a health
centre from 17th to 20th October, 2012 and conducted operations for 33
major cases and 13 minor cases. Out of which one of the major case was detected
and found to be HIV positive. The counselor of the centre did the necessary pre
and post-test counseling for the positive female client. After the counseling
the client was prepared for the surgical procedure i.e. (laproscopic
cholecystectomy).
The DACO had consulted the surgeon from USA
and Oking Hospital, Kohima for the operation of the said client. However, some of the Doctors and health staffs resisted and were not
willing to participate in the operation.
As such the
DACO discussed with the surgeons and his
team about the case in detail. Issues relating to stigma and discrimination of
the positive client, legal rights, obligations of the medical team were
minutely discussed. DACO was finally able
to convince the team to conduct the operation of the said client. Sadly, when the operation was over some of the staff of the health centre showed
their unhappiness and ignorance and burned down all the linens which was used
by the client.
Thanks to
the advocacy of the DACO the matter was
settled amicably with the staff who were not willing in dealing with such a positive
case.
