Significance of Voluntary blood donation -
Safe blood saves lives - but, for too many patients around the world whose survival depends on blood transfusion, blood transfusion is either not available or not safe. Every second of every day, people around the world - of all ages and from all walks of life - need blood transfusions to survive. Safe blood is blood that does not contain any viruses, parasites, drugs, alcohol, chemical substances, or other extraneous factors that might cause harm, danger or disease to the recipient.
Voluntary Blood Donors are considered as the safest source of blood as they have low prevalence of TTIs (Transfusion Transmissible Infections) like HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Malaria and Syphilis while the family/replacement donors carry higher prevalence of TTIs.
In spite of the rapid and remarkable advancements in medical science today, no factory can manufacture blood. It is only in human beings that human blood is made and circulated. Hence, donation - rather voluntary donation is the only way of accumulating blood at safe storage to meet emergency requirements for saving lives.
This is the greatest gift one can do for the mankind. Voluntary Blood Donors are saviors of mankind. If someone really loves oneself and other fellow beings, the only way to express it is to donate blood voluntarily. Donating blood means giving life to someone and it is believed that voluntary blood donors command the highest respect for their sacrifice.
DAPCUs can play a Pivot Role to Promote Voluntary Blood Donation-
Dapcu can promote voluntary blood donation through the main components of the Donor Recruitment Program are (i) to create awareness among students/youths regarding blood donation, (ii) to sensitize principals and teachers of colleges/educational institutes/local clubs/NGOs regarding voluntary blood donation, (iii) to motivate the students/youths for blood donation, (iv) to form a network of peer motivators from various colleges/educational institutes/local clubs/NGOs, (v) to try and evaluate the effectiveness of various strategies for donor motivation. We can train some good area wise voluntary motivators to motivate regarding Unawareness/ignorance of the general public about voluntary blood donation and to some extent their fear and misconceptions regarding blood donation. Again the Blood Transfusion Services in the By motivating the young people and other potential donors to donate blood voluntarily on regular basis we will be achieving
  • a safe and sustainable supply of blood and blood products

  • HIV & other TTI free young population This message has to be conveyed to a large number of people so that voluntary blood donation could become a mass movement. People must understand the importance of voluntary blood donation and come forward voluntarily to donate blood.
The main focus areas of VBD,Program may be
  • Healthy individuals to become regular voluntary blood donors
  • Existing voluntary blood donors to continue to donate regularly
  • Converting family replacement donors to voluntary blood donors by strengthening the blood donor education.
How did you observe this day at the district level? What was unique about your programme?

Central Delhi DAPCU on National Voluntary Blood Donation Day

Significance of Voluntary Blood Donation (VBD):-

Safe blood transfusion is essential for saving life in critical conditions and to prevent serious illness in patient and also those who are suffering from violence, injury, accidents, delivery etc. Voluntary Blood Donors are considered as safest source of blood as they have low prevalence of Transfusion Transmissible Infections (TTIs) like HIV, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Syphilis etc. On the other hand replacement blood donors can carry higher prevalence of TTIs.

According to an estimate India has an annual requirement of 8 million units of blood but able to collect only 5.6 million units of which 3 million units (56%) are from VBD. Rest 44% is still from unsafe sources like Professional/ Replacement/ Family Blood Donors.

DAPCUs can promote VBD by following measures:-

  1. Encourage employees working in offices of institutions situated in their respective areas to participate in VBD. (i.e Central, State and Local Bodies Government Offices etc.)
  2. Organizing Special VBD camps in Colleges with the help of Red Ribbon Club (RRC).
  3. A district blood donor group can be formulated by DAPCUs in their respective district comprising of volunteer blood donor residing in the district. This group can assist SACS’ and DAPCUs to promote, organize and strengthening VBD activities in the District. Member of this group can be trained by SACS/ DAPCUs to become good motivators. Unawareness, Ignorance, fear and misconceptions of General Public regarding VBD can be eradicated by these trained motivators. They can also be provided certificates of Registered Volunteer Blood Donor.

Vizianagaram: Blood Donation

Response on Voluntary Blood Donation - DAPCU-Vizianagaram,
 Andhra Pradesh

1.      What is the significance of the Voluntary Blood Donation?

One must donate blood to save lives, There is no substitute for blood, and nobody can produce or manufacture it anywhere.  Hence it is very precious and essential in human life.  Donating blood does not harm the body and it recovers in three months time naturally but people have myths and misconceptions about donating blood.  As such, we are unable to get sufficient blood donated as per our population requirements.  Youth has that much more potentiality and opportunity to donate blood regularly and they need to be motivated from the childhood and their parents too.

Voluntary Blood Donation is best in Blood Donation activity because there is a chance to transmit HIV and other life threatening diseases through Blood. When a person comes voluntarily for Blood Donation he will donate blood, only when he is healthy and he himself is sure that he does not have any risk previously.  This helps us to prevent transmission of diseases and promote non remunerated blood donations.

3.      What are few challenges faced by you getting voluntary blood donors and how did you overcome it?  VBD camps is one of the strategies used, what other strategies have you tried in your district?

Challenges:
·         Myths & Misconceptions on Blood Donation
·         Rural back ground and low literacy levels in the district
·         No component separation unit in the district (Donors interested to donate blood where BCSU is available.
·         Less pro active approach in Govt. Blood Bank due to less staff
·         No Blood motivators in Govt. Blood Bank
·    Donations are less from students in Holidays, Exams time and Summer time (Majority Voluntary Blood donations are given by Students only)
·         DAPCU need capacities in Blood Safety component
Strategies to overcome:
·        DAPCU formed 145 Red Ribbon Clubs in juniors &  Degree colleges to promote Voluntary Blood Donation and reducing Myths Misconceptions in the public through RRCs.
·         Encouraging youth clubs in rural areas for getting VBD through NYK and Link Workers Programme.
·         As per the need of Blood Motivator DAPCU requested DM & HO to depute on Assistant Para Medical Officer to Blood Bank especially for motivating donors and DM & HO deputed and He is in now working at Blood Bank and He goes to Colleges and other institutions three day in a week for conducting classes on VBD.
·         We keep some fixed Blood Donation camps which are organized by individuals for holidays and summer time.
·      APSACS sent well designed certificates for Blood Donors and it has sign of PD, SACS which attracts donors.
·     We circulated a DO letter to all Educational Institutions for VBD which was signed by District Collector

Balangir DAPCU- Blood Donation Day

National Voluntary Blood Donation Day
  1. Significance of Voluntary Blood Donation and Role of DAPCU to  Promote
Though medical science has developed a lot but it has not been able to develop any type of instrument / equipment / medicine for creation of blood which is inevitable for survival of human beings.  As the blood can not be created artificially that is why donation of blood is necessary. Just saying donation of one unit of blood is not enough but it saves a valuable life in disguise. To create awareness among the general people a Voluntary Blood Donation day is observed. So our nation observe VBD day on 1st October of each year.
2. Observation of Voluntary Blood donation Day  at the District & Uniqueness of the programmeWe also observed the said day in our district in this year. We involved many organizations in this day. Such as colleges, Red Ribbon Club, Rotary clubs, NGOs, NGOs under NYK, blood bank staffs and NACP staffs. This VBD day observed from grass root level to the top level like from village/ULB level to district level. We organized many camps in Panchayat / block level / district level. Debate / quiz and drawing competitions are organized involving educational institutions like private institutions, Govt. colleges & Govt. tech.    institutions to spread the message for voluntary blood donation.

3Challenges faced to get the  voluntary donors and Strategies used in the District to overcome the Challenges
In some of the interior areas there is a blind notion regarding donating blood is harmful to health & they shall be weak. For eradication of this type of blind ideas, visiting RR Clubs, mobilized the club members, organizing workshops involving and using the link workers at Panchayat level, towards VBD to spread the messages on blood donation, its good impact and benefits to the society. In addition to the workshops blood donation motivation session is conducted.
Another great challenge in donation camp is concealing of previous high risk activities which in turn results wastage of kits (blood bag), labor, time & money when it passes through 5 mandatory tests at Blood Bank Laboratory.

NATIONAL VOLUNTARY BLOOD DONATION DAY
DAPCU CHANDEL 2012

Significance of Voluntary Blood Donation and role of DAPCU to promote it.
This world we live in is full of uncertainties. None can say life on this earth will be without any unwanted incidents or pains. There is none who would not need the help from a fellow being during a lifetime.. Therefore we should step forward to help the needy when we get the chance so as to get a help when we are desperately in need. What help would be greater than saving the life of someone when he/she is dying. There are many people wailing and begging for this most valuable help to save the life of their dear and loved ones.
Hence, one of the life saving helps is the Voluntary Blood Donation, DAPCUs can definitely promote it by organising and conducting awareness campaign to mobilize and convince people to come forward for Blood Donation to save the people dying, known or unknown, which is, the concern of God also.

Observation by DAPCU Chandel at the District Level and the uniqueness about the Program.
The National Voluntary Blood Donation Day, by DAPCU in Chandel was observed by organising a campaign in the District Hospital in Collaboration with the NRHM under CMO, involving the ASHAs, members of RRC of the Colleges, school students and the local leaders.

Challenges faced, Overcomes and Expectations for the future.
At first, the participants were not much aware of the importance and benefits of blood donation. They had a wrong conception that by donating blood, the donor would suffer, lose weight, become weak, cause unconsciousness, .... etc.
But their misconceptions were shoo...d off by clearly explaining the importance, benefits, who and when can a person donate, what are the precautions to be taken and how is blood replenished,.... etc. by the CMO and other doctors present during the program and insisted the participants to go for Voluntary Blood Donation.
After hearing the valuable and inspiring deliveries made by the resource persons in the event, hopefully there will be a good number of donors coming out for Voluntary Blood Donation in the years to come which will compel NACO to set up a Blood Bank in Chandel District as well.

East Godavari , Andhra Pradesh on National Voluntary Blood Donors Day

What is the significance of the Voluntary Blood Donation?
Mrs Suryavathi Being Felictated
The major source of blood for human is, body of another human only, that to be of same group. When one component is having only one source of production then it will be very precious to the users.   In such condition if the blood is not collected from the available sources the total human race will be in trouble.  The Voluntary Blood Donors role comes then and their uncountable services.  Sometimes money cannot give life but one small action of voluntary blood donation can give new life to the needy. That is why Voluntary blood donation is as significant as food, home etc., like to every human.
How did you observe this day at the district level?  What was unique about your programme?
In general we planned rally to spread the message to public directly and indirectly. This time also conducted one VBD Camp at the campus of education centre.  The reason behind choosing of education centre as venue is, to involve and motivate the youth towards voluntary blood donation.
Dr Paramhamsa being felicitated
A simple compliment will boost the spirit of anyone; like that DAPCU East Godavari has planned one unique activity of facilitating the unalleviated voluntary blood donors from every nook and corner of the district. DAPCU has selected voluntary blood donors who have donated more than 20 – 100 times till now. The VBDs were facilitated with a memento and shawl in recognition to the unalleviated services to the needy community.

What are few challenges faced by you getting voluntary blood donors and how did you overcome it?  VBD camps is one of the strategies used, what other strategies have you tried in your district?
We cannot treat it as a problem, but actually it is just the disinterest or some misconception of youth only.  The major contribution of Blood donation is from a list of existing donors and their continuous donation only.  But there is a small gap in increase of new members for Voluntary blood Donation.  As a result the district is not able to meet its actual need through Voluntary blood donation.

DAPCU East Godavari would like to plan to awareness programs extensively for Women and youth in Rural Areas. If a wife is educated on the importance of blood donation, she will motivate her total family towards donation of blood voluntarily.   There is a pool of SHGs active in the district and through their meetings DAPCU educate women especially rural women on the importance of Voluntary Blood Donation. This may be possible with the cooperation and support of District Rural Development undoubtedly. This is only a thought of DAPCU, East Godavari, still we are exercising on it to bring it as a complete picture.
